The Kussmaul Auto Throttle 1 is an automatic high-idle controller designed to increase engine speed whenever battery voltage drops due to insufficient alternator output. Ideal for fire apparatus, ambulances, rescue vehicles, command vehicles, and other emergency response vehicles, the Auto Throttle 1 helps maintain adequate charging voltage while operating emergency lighting, radios, warning equipment, and other high-current electrical accessories.
The Auto Throttle 1 continuously monitors battery voltage and activates a relay when system voltage falls below the adjustable 12.5 VDC set point for at least 15 seconds. Once activated, the unit commands the engine to high idle through an external throttle actuator or electronic engine control and maintains high idle for a minimum of 5 minutes, or until system voltage rises above 13.4 VDC, whichever occurs later. This built-in timing prevents unnecessary cycling caused by temporary voltage fluctuations and helps maximize alternator output. The Auto Throttle 1 provides the control signal only; the throttle actuator or engine control interface is supplied by the installer.
