Fire Hose

In overseeing a fire department, you understand how essential a hose is. This key piece of gear directs water toward the flames at the precise angle, pressure and flow. As you upgrade your equipment or expand your facility to meet the needs of your region, browse all types of fire hoses now at Fire Safety USA.

What Is a Fire Hose?

Not all hoses are suited to putting out fires. And, in fact, a truck is outfitted with multiple fire hoses, each fulfilling a specific role in relation to the flames.

As the most common, a double jacket hose withstands repeat use and higher pressure levels. Distinguishing this fire hose from other types, a second layer reinforces its construction, reducing tear and abrasion risks as it's dragged over concrete and other rough, uneven surfaces. Additionally, both single and double jacket hoses include a rubber liner made of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) or polyurethane.

In addition to this standard firefighting hose, other types based on engine location, amount of water delivered, length and pressure include:

  • Preconnected fire engine hoses, which are 1.5 or 2.5 inches in diameter and already attached to the truck.
  • A fire hydrant hose, featuring a five-inch diameter and situated on top of the truck. Curb jumpers extend the length if the hydrant is initially out of reach.
  • A hose pack, a small, rolled hose for fighting fires affecting a structure's upper floors. This design is easier to transport up a ladder than other types.
  • Crosslay hoses, a lighter, smaller-diameter hose typically used for house fires.
  • Booster lines, a smaller, one-inch-diameter hose for putting out minor fires.
  • Deck guns, a high-flow hose also known as a fire or deck monitor that delivers over 1,000 gallons of water per minute to control larger fires.

Along with type, fire hoses are equipped with male and female couplings made of aluminum or brass. For the coupling, thread types for connecting other fittings, adapters and nozzles include NH/NST.

Additionally, the exterior of your fire hose lists ratings for tests related to life span and water delivery: Service Pressure, Proof Test Pressure and PSI Burst Test Pressure.
